Worn rollers are the reason a garage door announces itself through the whole house. A full set of quiet nylon rollers is one of the cheapest things you can do to an older door.
Symptoms
A door has eight to twelve rollers, two on every section, and they are the only thing between the door and the steel track. When they wear out the noise, the shudder and eventually the binding all follow.
Grinding, rattling and rumbling on the way up. Steel rollers with dry or seized bearings drag along the track instead of rolling, and the track amplifies every bit of it.
A roller that has partly seized skips instead of running. You can often feel it through the wall of a room above the garage.
Cheap builder-grade nylon rollers go brittle. Once the wheel breaks up, the stem is riding in the track on its own, which scores the track and puts the door at risk of coming off it.
With the door fully closed and the opener unplugged, spin one of the MIDDLE rollers by hand. It should turn freely and quietly. Grinding, wobble or a wheel that will not turn at all means the set is due. Stay away from the bottom corners: that bracket holds the lift cable under the full force of the springs.
The curved section at the top is where a worn roller shows up first, because that is where the door changes direction under the most load.
A new opener on worn rollers is the classic false economy. The friction is still there, the opener works harder than it should, and the noise the new opener was meant to solve is still in the room.
Understanding
A sectional door carries a roller at each end of every section, so eight on a four-section door and ten or twelve on a taller one. Each one is a small wheel on a stem, and the stem sits in a hinge or a bracket while the wheel runs inside the steel track. They are the only moving contact between a very heavy door and the frame of your garage.
Most doors leave the factory with the cheapest rollers the builder could specify: plain steel wheels with unsealed bearings, or brittle nylon with no bearings at all. They work, they are loud, and they wear out. A sealed nylon roller with a real steel bearing race costs a few dollars more each and runs far quieter for far longer.
The noise is the symptom people notice, but friction is the real cost. Worn rollers drag rather than roll, which means the springs work harder on every cycle and the opener works harder still. A door that has been running on dead rollers for years has usually taken years off its springs and its opener gear at the same time.
That is why a roller set is so often bundled into a yearly tune-up. The technician is already there, the hinges and bearings are already being lubricated, and doing the rollers in the same visit costs a fraction of what a separate call-out would.
The Repair
A roller change is straightforward on the middle sections and genuinely dangerous at the bottom bracket, which is where the cable is anchored under full spring load.
Pricing
Real 2026 ranges for the London area. A row naming one job is the all-in price for it before HST: the parts, the labour, the visit and the balance check afterwards, on a typical residential door.
| Roller job | Typical cost |
|---|---|
| Rollers, full set, single door | $120 to $320 |
| Yearly multi-point tune-up on its own | $120 to $220 |
| Track realigned or repaired | $150 to $350 |
| Hinges replaced, the full set | $150 to $275 |
| Door put back on its track | $150 to $280 |
| Service call on its own | $85 |
Your garage may sit outside these ranges. Door size and weight, spring rating, how much has been damaged and how easy the garage is to work in all move the number, and we tell you before we start, not after. A roller set is very often done during a yearly tune-up, which saves paying for a second visit. There is more on grades and lifespan in our roller replacement guide and on quieting a door generally in the noise guide.
Service Area
We cover London and the surrounding area: St. Thomas, Strathroy, Dorchester, Komoka, Ilderton, Lucan, Belmont and Thorndale. The prices on this page are for the London area; somewhere further out can carry a small travel charge, and we tell you that when you book. If you are just outside the area and not sure, call 519-619-7901 and ask. We would rather tell you straight away than have you wait for a callback that says no.
Questions
A full set on a typical residential door is $120 to $320 all in before HST, including the parts, the labour, the service call and a balance check. Bundled into a yearly tune-up it is usually at the lower end.
Builder-grade steel or plain nylon rollers commonly need replacing somewhere between five and seven years. Sealed nylon rollers with proper bearings run much longer and much more quietly.
Usually a great deal quieter. Lubrication solves most garage door noise, and worn rollers are the most common cause of the noise it does not fix. If the door is still loud afterwards, the next suspects are loose hardware or a chain-drive opener rather than the door itself.
The middle rollers, only with the door held safely open and the opener unplugged, working one section at a time. The bottom rollers, no. The bottom bracket holds the lift cable under full spring tension and it will come off the door with a great deal of force if it is unbolted with the springs wound.
Yes, in practice. They have all done the same work, so a partial change leaves you with most of the noise and a second visit not far away.
A full set of quiet nylon rollers is one visit and one of the cheapest upgrades an older door can get.
