What Goes Wrong
Almost every garage door call in London comes down to one of these five. Each one has its own page with the symptoms, the fix and the price, so you can work out what you are looking at before anyone comes near your driveway.
You heard a bang like a gunshot from the garage, and now the door weighs what it really weighs. The opener strains and gives up, or the door lifts a foot and drops back.
Garage door spring repair ↗One side of the door sits lower than the other, or a steel cable is hanging loose beside the track. The door is out of square and should not be run.
Garage door cable repair ↗The door announces itself through the house. Nylon wheels have worn flat, or steel rollers have seized and are dragging along the track instead of rolling.
Garage door roller replacement ↗The door is jammed at an angle, resting on a bent track or on the car. This is the one repair where using the opener again makes it worse.
Garage door off track repair ↗Usually one worn part rather than a dead machine: a capacitor, a drive gear, a pair of safety sensors or a logic board.
Garage door opener repair ↗Hinges, bearing plates, drums, bottom brackets, weatherseal, a dented panel, a door that will not seal at the floor. If it is on a garage door, we carry it.

A garage door is a balance machine. The springs above the opening store enough energy to carry the whole weight of the door, the cables pass that lift down to the bottom corners, the rollers keep it running straight, and the opener does very little of the actual work. When the balance is right, a 200 pound door lifts with two fingers.
That is why almost every expensive garage door repair starts life as a cheap one. A door that is slightly out of balance wears its cables, its rollers, its bearings and its opener gear all at the same time, and none of them complain loudly at first. The noise gets a little worse. The door hesitates on cold mornings. Then one part gives up and takes two others with it.
It is also why the first thing we do on any repair visit is pull the release cord and lift the door by hand. A door that will not hold still halfway is out of balance, and no amount of adjusting the opener will change that. Getting that step right is what stops a $229 spring turning into a new opener, a new set of cables and a creased top section.
The other half of it is age. Springs are rated in cycles rather than years, cables and rollers are wear parts, and openers have a working life of fifteen to twenty years. A door that has had none of that attention since it was installed is not broken so much as overdue, and it is usually cheaper to catch the whole list in one visit than to meet it one failure at a time.

A single failed part on a sound door is almost always worth repairing.
