LiftMaster • Model L979M
The LiftMaster L979M mounts outside, right beside the garage door, and opens it with a personal code. It is the easy way in for anyone arriving on foot, and a lifesaver on the day a remote goes missing.
Give each person in the house their own permanent PIN, set up temporary PINs for guests and trades that switch themselves off and, on openers made in 2006 or later that are not on an external receiver, close the door with a single press on your way out.
It works with Chamberlain, LiftMaster and most Craftsman openers made after 1997 with safety sensors, runs on one 9-volt battery with no wiring, and is designed to withstand all weather conditions.
We supply the keypad, program it to your opener and mount it for you, anywhere in London and the surrounding area.
Features
A PIN for everyone. Program more than one permanent PIN, so each member of the household has their own instead of five people sharing one code. A PIN can be changed at any time.
Guest PINs that expire on their own. Create a temporary 4-digit PIN that works for 1 to 255 hours, or for 1 to 255 openings, then stops by itself. It can also be cleared early at any time.
One-touch close. Leaving on foot? Press the HOME button alone to close the door, no code needed. This needs an opener made in 2006 or later, is not available through an external receiver, and can be switched off.
Stop or reverse from the keypad. After you enter your PIN and press HOME, the keypad stays active for 15 seconds, so the HOME button can stop, start or reverse the door while you watch it move.
Lit up after dark. The illuminated keys make it easy to find the right buttons and enter your code at night.
Ultra-secure encryption. It uses LiftMaster's Security+ 3.0 signal on openers with a white LEARN button, and still works with the earlier Security+ 2.0 and Security+ systems.
Simple battery changes. It runs on one 9-volt battery, included. The lights dim or stop flashing when it is running low, and the cover slides off for a quick swap.
Phone Control
On newer openers, the ones with a white LEARN button, connected to the myQ app, the keypad can be managed from your phone.
Worth knowing: on openers with a white LEARN button, the myQ app is needed to change a PIN or set up a guest PIN. On older openers the app is optional and the codes are set at the opener itself.
Compatibility
It works with Chamberlain, LiftMaster and most Craftsman openers made after 1997 with safety sensors. The Craftsman Series 100 is not compatible. The quickest check is the colour of the LEARN button on the opener's motor unit.
The LEARN button is on the back or side of the motor unit on the ceiling, usually under a light cover, near the aerial wire. You will need a step ladder for most ceiling openers; on a wall-mount unit it is at hand height.
Purple LEARN buttons fade to brown over the years, so a button that looks brown is very likely a purple one. Green, or any colour not shown above, is an older variant. Call and we will check it with you.
Not sure, or you have a Genie or another brand? We supply Chamberlain and LiftMaster. We program and service most other brands, including Genie, Craftsman, Wayne Dalton, Linear, Lynx and Stanley. We fit universal keypads for most of them, so book a visit and we will match yours on site.
If the opener is too old for any keypad, that is a conversation about replacing the opener rather than adding to it, and our garage door openers page sets out what we install.
If you would rather not go looking, call 519-619-7901 and we will work it out with you over the phone.
Ontario Weather
The keypad is designed to withstand all weather conditions and is rated down to -20 °C. That covers most of a London winter, but not the coldest mornings of a cold snap, and the thing that actually fails in the cold is the battery rather than the keypad.
Two things make the difference. Fit a lithium 9V battery before winter rather than an alkaline one, because alkaline loses most of its punch below freezing and a lithium cell does not. And mount the keypad under an overhang, out of driving rain, so that water is not sitting on the keys to freeze overnight. We check the seal around the keypad on any visit, at no extra cost.
Our wireless keypad guide goes into the winter checks in more detail, including what to do with a keypad that has gone unresponsive in a cold snap.

Before You Replace It
Most of the time it is not a dead keypad. The usual causes, in the order we find them, are a flat battery, a pairing lost after a power cut or a surge, worn buttons on an older unit, moisture that has got in behind the cover, and a keypad that is simply out of range of the opener.
Nearly all of those are a reprogram or a battery rather than a new unit, and it is worth ruling them out before you buy anything. Our wireless keypad guide walks the checks in order, and the troubleshooter will narrow down a wider door or opener fault in about a minute.
If it needs a person, call 519-619-7901 and we will tell you what we think it is before anyone drives out.

Questions
It works with Chamberlain, LiftMaster and most Craftsman openers made after 1997 with safety sensors. The Craftsman Series 100 is not compatible. The quickest check is the colour of the LEARN button on the motor unit, and the compatibility section on this page has the full chart. If you have a Genie or another brand, we fit universal keypads for most of them instead.
Yes. The L979M holds more than one permanent PIN, so each person in the household can have their own rather than sharing one code between five people. Any PIN can be changed at any time, which matters when a houseguest leaves or a relationship changes. On openers with a white LEARN button, the myQ app is used to manage those PINs.
Yes. A guest PIN can be set to work for 1 to 255 hours, or for 1 to 255 openings, and then stop by itself. It can also be cleared early at any time. It is the tidy answer for a cleaner, a dog walker, a contractor or family staying for a week, because you never have to remember to take the access back.
It depends on your opener. On older openers the app is optional and the keypad is programmed at the opener itself. On openers with a white LEARN button the myQ app is required to change a PIN or to set up a guest PIN, so you will need a phone and a myQ account to manage codes. The app also adds notifications, access history and a battery level readout.
Yes, and that is the cheapest way to have one fitted. Most keypads go on during a service visit you already have booked, so there is no second trip to pay for. Tell us when you book, or call 519-619-7901 and we will add it to the job. If you need us out for the keypad on its own we will tell you what that looks like first.
Get a free, no-obligation quote. We supply the keypad, program it to your opener and mount it for you, with no deposit and nothing to pay until the job is 100% done. In the message box, say it is a keypad and, if you know it, the colour of the LEARN button on your opener.
