Before You Touch Anything: Cut the Power, and Never Force a Heavy Door

Cause 4: A Stripped Drive Gear or Stuck Trolley
If the spring is intact, the lock is off, and the door is connected, but the motor hums and the chain or belt does not move, the problem is usually inside the opener. After ten or fifteen years of cycles the teeth wear down, and eventually the motor spins freely while the chain stays still. Cause 5: A Failing Start Capacitor
Inside the motor head is a small component called a capacitor, which gives the motor the jolt of energy it needs to start turning. When a capacitor fails, the motor receives power and hums, but it cannot develop enough torque to begin rotating. A capacitor is an electrical part that stores a charge even after the opener is unplugged, so this is firmly a job for a technician rather than a homeowner.
