Extension Spring Safety Cables: The Critical Upgrade Every Older Canadian Garage Needs

The Twenty-Dollar Cable That Stops a Forty-Year-Old Mistake

Walk into any twenty-five-year-old garage in London and look up. If you see a long coil spring stretched along each horizontal track running from the front header to a rear anchor point, the door is operating on extension springs. Now look more carefully. Threaded through the centre of each of those springs, there should be a thin steel cable, anchored at both ends, hanging slightly slack. That cable is a safety cable, sometimes called a containment cable, and on many older Canadian garage doors it is missing entirely.

The Door & Access Systems Manufacturers Association (DASMA) is unambiguous about this. Their published safety guidance states plainly: "If your garage door has extension springs, you need a safety cable that runs through the spring and secures to the wall or ceiling at each end." This article explains what safety cables do, why they exist, how to tell whether your garage has them, what happens when they are missing, and why this is one of the few garage door safety upgrades that is genuinely inexpensive yet potentially life-saving.

First, Make Sure You Have Extension Springs

Safety cables are only required on extension spring systems. Torsion springs use a completely different mechanism and have their own retention method built in. If you are not sure which type your door has, the difference is easy to see from the floor.

Torsion springs sit horizontally on a steel shaft mounted on the wall directly above the closed door. There are usually one or two short, fat springs, each typically 40 to 90 cm long. They twist (wind up) to store energy. Because they are clamped to a continuous shaft, a snapped torsion spring usually stays put.

Extension springs stretch lengthwise. They are mounted along the two horizontal tracks that run back from the door header toward the rear of the garage. Each spring is anywhere from 60 to 90 cm long at rest and stretches another 30 to 60 cm when the door closes. They store energy by being pulled longer, not by being twisted. When one snaps, there is nothing holding it on the track. Without a safety cable, the broken half of the spring becomes a projectile.

Quick visual check: open the door and stand inside the garage. Look up at the tracks running away from the door. If you see one long spring stretched along each side, you have extension springs. If you see one or two stubby springs on a shaft above the closed door, you have torsion. What Exactly Does a Safety Cable Do?

An extension spring at full stretch holds enormous stored energy. On a typical 16-foot double door, each spring can carry around 100 to 200 kg of pull force when the door is fully closed. That energy has to come out of the spring somewhere. In normal operation, it lifts the door. In failure, it goes wherever physics sends it.

When a stretched extension spring breaks, it does not gently let go. It snaps and recoils. The two halves of the spring fly apart with most of the stored energy still inside them. Without anything restraining the spring ends, those pieces can launch sideways across the garage at high speed.

A safety cable is a piece of galvanised aircraft cable, typically 3 mm (1/8 inch) in diameter, that runs through the hollow centre of the extension spring from the front anchor point to the rear. Both ends are bolted to the door's track brackets. If the spring breaks, the two pieces of the spring slide along the cable but cannot leave it. The cable contains the failure, the same way a chain on a heavy bag stops the bag from flying across the gym.

The cable does not stop the door from falling. It does not replace the spring. It simply turns a potential projectile into a contained piece of scrap metal. That is its only job, and it does it for the entire life of the door for the cost of a few takeout coffees.

How to Tell If Your Garage Has Safety Cables (or Doesn't)

You can do this inspection yourself in under two minutes and without touching anything. Open the door fully so the springs are in their relaxed, shortest position. With the door open, the springs are no longer storing significant tension and the cable is much easier to see.

Stand inside the garage and look up at one of the extension springs. You are looking for a thin steel cable, roughly the diameter of a pencil lead, threaded through the inside of the spring. The cable should:

If you see no cable inside the spring at all, the door is operating without a safety cable. This is the most common condition on older homes, particularly houses built or re-doored before about 2000. The cable was either never installed or was removed at some point and never replaced.

If you see a cable but it appears frayed, broken, kinked, or hanging loose from only one anchor, the cable is non-functional and needs to be replaced. A safety cable that is anchored on only one end provides no containment.

On service calls in older neighbourhoods, missing extension spring safety cables are one of the most common safety findings. The original builder may have installed them or not; later repairs sometimes removed them to make a service job easier and the technician never came back to reinstall. Whatever the history, the cost of catching this today is small. The cost of finding out the hard way is enormous.

What Happens When the Cable Is Missing and the Spring Breaks

An extension spring on a typical residential garage door has a manufacturer-rated cycle life of around 10,000 cycles. DASMA's Technical Data Sheet 190 on Factors Affecting Spring Cycle Life explains the variables that shorten that life: corrosion, rough handling at install, applying a spring to a door it was not sized for, leaving the door in the open position for extended periods, and exposure to salt or chemicals. In a typical Canadian garage with daily use, the cycle life translates to roughly 10 to 15 years. Past that point, a spring can fail at any moment.

When a spring without a safety cable lets go, three things tend to happen, sometimes all at once:

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission tracks roughly 30,000 garage-door-related emergency-room visits annually across all causes. Spring failures, finger pinches, falling doors, and DIY repair injuries make up a substantial share of that total. A safety cable does not address every one of those scenarios, but it eliminates the worst category of extension spring failure outcomes.

Why DASMA Made Safety Cables a Standard Recommendation

DASMA is the trade association for North American garage door manufacturers and is the source most reputable installers and inspectors reference. Most new residential doors sold today in Canada use torsion springs precisely because torsion systems are inherently safer in failure than extension systems. But millions of older doors with extension springs are still in service across the country, and the safety cable retrofit is the simplest, cheapest way to bring those doors closer to the modern safety baseline.

What a Properly Installed Safety Cable Looks Like

An installed safety cable should:

One cable per spring. A two-spring door (which is most double-car residential doors with extension springs) needs two safety cables, one on each side. A four-spring system on a heavy commercial door needs four. The cable cannot be shared between springs.

Threading a cable through the spring is mechanically simple. The dangerous part is that to do it properly, the spring tension has to be released first. That means the door must be locked in the fully open position so the springs are at their slackest, and the existing spring clips have to be unbolted long enough to thread the cable through. If you are comfortable doing this, the procedure is within reach for an experienced DIY homeowner. If you are not certain you know how to lock the door safely open and verify zero tension in the spring, this is a job to hand to a professional. Most local garage door companies will install both cables in under thirty minutes as a stand-alone service call, often for less than $150 in total including parts and labour. What Safety Cables Are NOT

There is a common confusion between three different cables on the same garage door, and it is worth clearing up because they each do different jobs.

They earn their keep on the one bad day in fifteen years when the spring lets go.

How to Add Safety Cables to a Door That Doesn't Have Them

Most Canadian garage door suppliers and many big-box hardware stores stock extension spring safety cable kits. A kit typically includes two cables (one per spring), pre-cut to about 2.6 m (8.5 feet), with a loop or thimble at one end and an adjustment clip or slotted bracket at the other. Prices in Canada generally fall between $20 and $40 per pair. Look for galvanised 7x7 strand steel cable rated for a minimum 175 kg working load.

The job at a high level looks like this. We are deliberately keeping the description general rather than offering it as a step-by-step DIY procedure, because, as noted above, the spring tension release step is where homeowners get hurt:

  1. The door is opened fully and locked in the open position so the springs are at their shortest, slackest state.
  2. The opener is unplugged so no one can hit a wall button mid-job.
  3. The front spring anchor is loosened just enough to feed the cable through the spring from front to back.
  4. The cable is anchored at both ends with the supplied bolts or S-hooks.
  5. The spring anchor is reset to its original tension.
  6. The cable's slack is checked: just enough to lie loose along the spring with the door open, not so much that it sags into the spring coils.
  7. The procedure is repeated on the second spring.
  8. The door is cycled three or four times manually, watching that the cable stays clear of the spring's coils and does not catch on anything.

A garage door professional doing this work as a service call will typically complete both cables in twenty to thirty minutes. Frequency: How Often Should Safety Cables Be Inspected and Replaced?

Safety cables themselves have a long working life. They are not stretched or flexed in normal operation and are protected from most weather by the springs they thread through. A galvanised cable in a heated Canadian garage should last as long as the door itself, perhaps twenty to thirty years.

Replace the cable any time it has visible damage. The parts are inexpensive and the labour is short. If both springs are due for replacement, replace the safety cables at the same time. The labour to access the springs is the bulk of the job; adding a new pair of cables while you are there costs almost nothing extra.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a torsion-spring door. Do I need safety cables?

No. Torsion springs are mounted on a continuous steel shaft and are restrained by their winding cones. Even when a torsion spring breaks, the pieces stay on the shaft. My door has extension springs and no safety cables but it has been working for thirty years. Do I really need to add them?

Yes. The spring's age is exactly why. DASMA TDS 190 documents that springs degrade with cycle count, with corrosion, and with environmental exposure. A spring that has been working perfectly for thirty years is on borrowed time, not a safe one. The day it breaks, you want a safety cable to be there. The same logic is why every airline pilot still does the pre-flight checklist on a flight to Toronto that takes off eight hundred times a year without incident.

Can I install a safety cable on a door that has only one extension spring?

Yes, although a one-spring extension system on a double-car door is unusual and may indicate a previous installer cut corners. Have the spring sizing verified. A single spring is either correctly sized to the door or undersized; either way, install the safety cable on the spring you have and consult a professional about whether the spring itself is right for the door's weight.

I added insulation to my door, will the safety cable still work?

The safety cable is fine. What you need to verify is that the spring still matches the door's weight. Adding insulation to a previously uninsulated door can increase the door weight by 10 to 30 kg, which can push the existing spring beyond its rated capacity. My existing safety cable is rusted. Is it still doing its job?

Probably not as well as it should. Surface rust on a galvanised cable is mostly cosmetic, but rust pitting (small dark divots where the rust has eaten into the wire) reduces the cable's strength dramatically. Replace any safety cable showing rust pitting or broken strands. Cables are inexpensive and the job is short.

What if my safety cable broke at the anchor point and is hanging loose?

The safety cable is currently providing no protection. Stop using the door until the cable is reattached or replaced. If the cable broke at the anchor, the failure mode was almost certainly age or corrosion of the anchor hardware, and inspection of the spring and lifting cable is a good idea at the same time. This is the right moment to call a professional.

Are safety cables required by Ontario law?

Building code requirements vary, but the practical answer is that DASMA, every responsible installer, and most home inspectors treat safety cables as required on any extension spring system. If your home insurance company performs a home inspection on a claim involving spring failure injury, missing safety cables are very likely to be cited as a contributing factor. Treat them as required regardless of whether the building code in your municipality specifies them.

Can I just convert the door to torsion springs instead?

You can, and on many older doors the conversion is the right long-term answer. A torsion conversion typically runs $400 to $800 in the Canadian market depending on the door, and it both eliminates the need for safety cables and improves the door's smoothness and balance. If the existing extension springs are themselves end-of-life and need replacement anyway, the cost difference between replacing the springs and converting to torsion is often smaller than people expect.
