Timer-to-Close is a programmable feature that starts a countdown the moment your garage door reaches the fully open position. When the countdown expires, the opener triggers a visual and audible warning, then closes the door. The countdown resets every time the door is reopened. The most common factory-set durations are 1 minute, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes on the basic LiftMaster wall panel. On app-based systems, the duration is normally set by the homeowner in any whole-minute increment from 5 to 60 minutes, and on some systems it can be tied to a specific time of day rather than a count of minutes.
TTC is what the industry calls an unattended close. The homeowner is not standing in front of the door watching it move; the opener is making the decision on its own. Unattended close is the reason every modern compatible opener also requires monitored photoelectric safety sensors. The 2016 and 2018 revisions of UL 325 (Seventh Edition) tightened the rules for any garage door operator that can close the door without an operator present. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission codified the same updates in 16 CFR Part 1211, and published the rule change in the Federal Register on July 13, 2018, with an effective date of September 11, 2018. The Canadian equivalent enforcement comes through ANSI/CAN/UL 325, which is referenced by the National Building Code provisions adopted into Ontario's Building Code.

- Five-second audible warning. Before any unattended close, the opener must sound an audible alert that can be heard inside the confines of the garage for at least five seconds.

- Monitored entrapment protection. The photo-eye safety sensors must be wired through a monitored circuit. Most Canadian homeowners have one of two options available:
- Hardware TTC on the wall control panel. Available on millions of LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers with a compatible motion-detecting wall panel (the LiftMaster 881LMW is the most common in our service area). Fixed settings of 1, 5, or 10 minutes. Works whether or not your opener is connected to Wi-Fi. No app required.
- Software-based schedules in the manufacturer app. Available on any Wi-Fi connected opener via the myQ app (LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman) or the Aladdin Connect app (Genie). Fully customizable duration, plus the option to use a time-of-day schedule (close every night at 10 PM) instead of a count-up timer.
The two options are not mutually exclusive. Many homeowners enable hardware TTC at 5 or 10 minutes for the routine catch-the-mistake case, and add a nightly app-based schedule at 10 PM as a second safety net. Both will close the door once; the second event is harmless because the door is already closed.

Step 1: Verify your wall control is TTC-capable
Look at the wall panel beside the door from the garage into the house. If it has three small LEDs labelled 1 min, 5 min, 10 min and dedicated ON, OFF, and HOLD OPEN buttons in addition to the large door-control button, you have a TTC-capable panel. If you have a simple round-button panel with no LEDs, your wall control does not support hardware TTC. Step 4: Pause TTC when you need to
If you are working in the garage and want the door to stay open for the afternoon, press and release the HOLD OPEN button on the wall panel. TTC is suspended until you press HOLD OPEN again to release it. Do not just leave the door open and assume TTC will not close it on top of your project; the timer keeps counting from the moment the door reached fully open, not from the moment you stepped inside.
Step 5: Disable TTC if you ever need to
Press and hold the OFF button on the wall panel until all three duration LEDs go dark and the motor unit beeps. TTC is now disabled and the door will only close when you press the wall button, hit a remote, or use the app.

Step 1: Verify the door is paired

In the myQ app main menu, tap Schedules, then tap the plus icon in the top-right to create a new schedule.
Step 3: Name and add the door
Give the schedule a recognisable name (for example, "Nightly Close"). Tap Add Device and select your garage door from the list.
Step 4: Set the time and the action
Tap Time and pick the time you want the door to close (10:00 PM is a common choice). Confirm the time zone (Eastern Time for London, Ontario). Then set the action to Close.

A Duration Rule closes the door if it has been open continuously for longer than a specified period. To set it up, open the Aladdin Connect app, tap Rules in the menu, tap the plus icon, choose Duration, set the door, set the duration (5 minutes, 30 minutes, 1 hour are common), pick the days, and choose the action. Aladdin Connect offers three actions: Close (close the door silently), Close and Notify (close the door and send a push notification), or Notify Me (just tell you the door is open, without closing it). Option B: Scheduled Close Time (the nightly catch)
Scheduled Close Time runs every day at a specific time of day, regardless of how long the door has been open. To set it up, tap Schedules instead of Rules, tap the plus icon, pick the time, pick the days, and save. One important note: openers manufactured before January 1, 1993 do not have monitored photoelectric safety sensors and therefore cannot be made UL 325 compliant. The Safety Habits to Pair With TTC

- Run the DASMA-recommended monthly safety test. Why does my LiftMaster opener beep for five seconds before the door closes?

Can I make TTC quieter? My garage shares a wall with a bedroom.
No. The beep is required by code and the volume is set at the factory to a level that meets the UL 325 sound-level requirement (45 dB at 10 feet). You cannot legally disable or muffle it. If the beep is a real problem, the practical workarounds are: (a) set TTC for a time when no one is sleeping, or (b) move the opener motor head and its work-light buzzer further from the shared wall (a service call can sometimes reposition the motor by a foot or two without much expense).
Can I use TTC with Alexa, Google Assistant, or Apple HomeKit voice commands?
Voice commands to close the door always work (closing is permitted with the same UL 325 warning sequence), but you cannot use a voice command to open the door from outside the home without a security code on most platforms. My door starts to close, the sensors trigger an obstruction, and the door reverses. Does the TTC timer reset?
Yes. The countdown restarts from zero when the door returns to fully open. This is intentional: it gives a homeowner who walked under the closing door a second chance to clear the area before the next close cycle.
Will TTC close the door on a car that is half-parked under it?
It should not. If the rear of the car is sitting in the safety beam path (somewhere between 4 and 6 inches off the floor, depending on installer setup, per DASMA TDS #364), the door will reverse before contact. If the car is parked far enough forward that the beam is clear but the trunk is still under the door path, the door can hit the trunk. The fix is to park the car fully inside the garage or fully outside, never straddling the door opening.
The door closes, but my Wi-Fi is slow. Will TTC time out?
Hardware TTC on the 881LMW does not use Wi-Fi at all and is unaffected by your internet connection. App-based schedules on myQ and Aladdin Connect do depend on the manufacturer cloud, but the cloud commands fail safe: if the cloud is unreachable, the door simply does not close. It does not accidentally close at the wrong time.
Can I set TTC to a duration shorter than 1 minute?
No. The minimum on the 881LMW hardware is 1 minute and the minimum on most app schedules is 5 minutes. UL 325 also implicitly prevents shorter durations because the five-second warning is mandatory and a very short TTC duration would leave almost no useful open time before the close starts.
Does TTC work during a power outage?
Only if your opener has a battery backup. Modern LiftMaster Wi-Fi openers and some Genie units include built-in battery backups that keep TTC running through short outages. What happens if my photo-eye sensors fail while TTC is enabled?
The opener detects the sensor fault, refuses to close the door automatically, and either flashes a fault code on the wall panel or sends an alert through the app (or both). Is the audible alert the same on every brand?
